IT was the biggest wedding since Scott and Charlene in 1987. And it didn’t disappoint.
Neighbours made history last night after airing its first same-sex wedding scene in its 33 years on air.
Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) and David Tanaka (Takaya Honda), both 30, tied the knot in an intimate ceremony officiated by marriage celebrant Jemima Davies-Smythe (Magda Szubanski).

And there wasn’t a dry eye in this viewer’s house.
First night staying at my Mums. First night watching Neighbours in about a decade. Yes, it’s the gay wedding. And no, YOU’RE CRYING!— Bobby 🐝🇪🇸 (@officialbobby)
Others spoke about the impact the TV wedding will have on people’s lives.
“You can’t imagine what this means to LGBTIQ kids,” Sydneysider Joseph Scales wrote on Twitter.
42 weddings in #Neighbours‘ 33 years. Right now they celebrate their 1st #LGBTIQ wedding. I grew up watching Neighbours, my sisters reminiscing about Scott & Charlene’s wedding. Visibility matters. You can’t imagine what this means to LGBTIQ kids ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 #marriageequality— Joseph Scales (@JosephScales)
Another viewer said he never believed he would see the day.
My little gay heart is full tonight.
I remember being 13 and crying along to Scott and Charlene’s wedding. I never believed that I would ever see something on Neighbours that made me feel more than that.— NeighTweets (@NeighTweets)
Some expressed surprise that Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s Especially For You played during the wedding scene.
“Absolutely made my day,” said Oxford viewer Pritha Bardham.
Kylie & Jason’s Especially For You being played during #Neighbours first gay wedding absolutely made my day! ❤️

Aussie expat Scott De Blasio tweeted: “Perfect” from London.

Szubanski also won praise for her appearance in the wedding scene.
Honestly, in the five minutes she’s been appointed, Magda’s character has shown more commitment to this ceremony than Susan did in the weeks of preparation. #Neighbours— Kenny Young (@kennyyoung)
Others want to start a campaign to keep her on the show permanently. This viewer may just get his wish . . .
Be careful what you wish for! 😂❤️🌈🙏🏻 https://t.co/2iqUGzKhU9— Magda Szubanski (@MagdaSzubanski)
